XRP: Experiential Robotics Platform

Under the leadership of Principal Jason Perkail, Studio Perks collaborated with DEKA Research & Development, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), and the First® Robotics Competition to address a vital issue: "How can we democratize robotics education for children worldwide?" Over nine months, the collaboration yielded the Experiential Robotics Platform (XRP), a scalable and affordable robotics system designed to evolve with learners of all skill levels.

Challange

The paramount task was to engineer a robotics platform that could serve a dual purpose: being affordable enough for mass adoption while offering a versatile and modular design that could grow with users as they advanced from beginners to experts in robotics.

Solution

Studio Perks, under Jason Perkail's guidance, went through 13 iterative design concepts before landing on the final version of XRP. This robust platform was engineered to allow for a plethora of modular additions, enabling users to undertake a wide range of increasingly complex robotics projects. It features affordability, functional diversity, and expandability, with a price tag under $50 and capabilities ranging from ultrasonic sensing to quad-motor control.

Result

The XRP has been integrated into WPI's educational curriculum and is the cornerstone of their upcoming online degree program in robotics. It stands as the world's most cost-effective, full-featured STEM robot, setting a new standard for robotics education. The project synergized the expertise of DEKA, founded by inventor Dean Kamen, WPI's educational acumen, and the student engagement experience of the First® Robotics Competition, collectively shifting the paradigm of global robotics education.
